Two Moors Campaign - A Brief History ...

It is understood, that around the Autumn of 2003, npower started work on their plans for wind turbines at Batsworthy Cross and that agreements have since been signed between this company and landowners prior to npower going public with their plans.

On Thursday the 13th October’ 05 a small number of immediate residents to Batsworthy Cross, received a letter from a Mr Simon Holt of npower.

This letter said that  9, 2MW wind turbines were planned on land between the A361 and Batsworthy Cross.

By Friday 14th October’ 05, Mr Holt was seeking noise monitoring locations on properties within about a mile of the centre of this planned site.

Mr Holt said he wanted a planning application for 9 or maybe 10 wind turbines submitted to NDDC early in 2006

The surfacing of an Airtricity map, revealed that Airtricity had also been talking to land owners around Batsworthy Cross.

Seven days after npower went public with their plans, 57 residents met in Creacombe to share their information about these plans and to pool their resources in opposing them.

As of Saturday 29th October ‘05 Mr Holts letter drop was delivered to the community within a 10km radius of npowers planned site.

As of the next day, the campaign letter was delivered.

It included details of its first campaign meeting to be held on Friday 11th November ‘05 at Knowstone Village Hall.

On Friday 11th November ’05, a committee of 14 strong was appointed and the campaign was named the Two Moors Campaign.

By Sunday 13th November ’05,  the surfacing of another Airtricity map and letter revealed that Airtricity had been talking to land owners to the north of Knowstone, around Luckett Moor, Pauls Moor, Bullaford Moor and Wester Bullaford Moor.

The energy companies are pushing their plans because they want our money from  subsidy. They can get it by putting up wind turbines.

It is therefore naive to believe that at this stage, the energy companies are going to give us an accurate or complete picture of their plans and the consequences of them.

The initial concept of the campaign was to share information about wind turbines on the basis that until we had all learnt about them, it  would be unwise to give the energy companies even an inch i.e.

1.      Why are the energy companies trying to force their plans upon us i.e. what is motivating them?

2.      What does it really mean to have wind turbines in our lives?

3.      Do wind turbines even work and are the claims by the energy companies fact or fiction?

This initial concept is still in place but the emerging facts get more and more disturbing. All over this country, campaigns like this one are rapidly forming and growing bigger and faster than ever before in attempts to put a stop to this futile vandalism.
